Months before
A few weeks before
The last week
If you are flying
If you are driving or renting a car
If children are coming
Packing for children is a list of its own: one per child, made with them, so they can tick it off themselves.
Then the nice part
A checklist gets you there. The weeks before can also be fun. A few ideas from the trip countdown:
-
Choose the one thing you must eat
Read up on the local food and settle on a single dish you will not leave without trying. Write it down so it becomes a promise.
-
Learn five phrases in the local language
Hello, please, thank you, excuse me and "this is delicious" cover a surprising amount. Say each one out loud until it stops feeling strange.
-
Plan your first-hour ritual on arrival
Decide what you will do in the first hour: a coffee on a corner, a walk to the water, a toast. A small ritual turns arriving into a moment.
Questions people ask
How far ahead should I check my passport?
As soon as you book, and at the latest three or four months before. Many countries ask for a passport that is valid for some months beyond your return date, often six. Renewals can take weeks.
What should I do the week before a vacation?
Confirm your accommodation, save offline maps and copies of your passport and bookings, check your cards work abroad, and save the local emergency number. The day before: set an out-of-office, empty the fridge and set the heating.
What do people most often forget before a trip?
Small things: the right plug adapter, refilling medicines, phone roaming, and someone to water the plants. They are all on the list above, with a time to do each.
Can I get this list with dates for my own trip?
Yes. Start a trip countdown in Gladsoon and the Practical tab puts each task on a date before your departure. Answer whether you are flying, driving or bringing children, and it hides what does not apply.
